Songjiang Hills

Shanghai's only natural forest hills — Sheshan's East and West peaks, linked by a gentle traverse of bamboo boardwalks, heritage buildings, and hilltop views.
The Songjiang hills rise from the flat plain about 40 km south-west of Shanghai's city centre — the closest thing the city has to a mountain escape. The heart of the area is Sheshan (佘山), a pair of forested peaks split by a short road transfer: East Sheshan is the nature half, with stone steps, bamboo boardwalks, and a Ming-era traveler's statue; West Sheshan is the heritage half, crowned by a Song-dynasty pagoda, the 1900 Shanghai Astronomy Museum, and the Basilica of Our Lady of Sheshan. Both parks are free, the walking is gentle and paved, and Metro Line 9 plus local buses make the whole area reachable without a car.
