Start With Three Questions

Shanghai's routes are flat and close, so the choice is rarely about fitness — it is about time, transit, and mood. Ask: how many hours do I have? Do I want to stay on the metro or ride a bike? Do I want green cover, skyline, or museums? The answers below point to a specific route.

If You Have Half a Day and Want Green

Gongqing Forest Park Loop is the clear pick. It is free with booking, flat, and self-contained — a forest train, flower borders, and lawns in one loop, reachable by metro Line 8. You can do it in two to three hours and still have the afternoon. It is also the most family-friendly option in the city.

If You Want a Real Hill

Sheshan East & West Peaks is the only natural-hill option — bamboo boardwalks and twin summits about 30 km out, best reached by Line 9 plus a shared bike or the 92/98 bus. Tianma Mountain is quieter and more forested, with a leaning pagoda, but needs a taxi or bus for the final 10 km. Choose Sheshan for accessibility, Tianma for solitude.

If You Want Skyline and Flat

Pudong Riverside Greenway and Xuhui Riverside are the flat, photogenic choices. Pudong puts the Lujiazui towers at your shoulder and is built for cycling; Xuhui is the cultural-industrial promenade past cement works and museums. Both are easy metro rides and suit first-timers who want the postcard view without exertion.

If You Want Culture and Museums

West Bund and Suzhou Creek are the heritage walks. West Bund runs from the old cement works to the Expo museum cluster; Suzhou Creek threads sculpture parks, warehouse galleries, and the bridges at the creek's mouth. Pick these when the weather is grey or you would rather look at buildings than trees.

If You Have Kids or Are New to Hiking

Gongqing Forest Park (train, lawns, boats), the riverside greenways (flat, separated, stroller-friendly), and Twin Hills (a short, low-effort summit with a sunset view) are the gentlest. Avoid the outer Songjiang hills with very young children unless you are comfortable with a longer transit day.
