Chongming Island

Chongming Island (崇明岛) is Shanghai's rural third: a flat, low-lying island at the Yangtze's mouth, often described as the world's largest alluvial island — land built by the river's sediment rather than by geology. Farming began here centuries ago, and the modern island was shaped by the state farms and sent-down youth of the 1950s and 1960s, whose reclaimed villages (前卫村 dates to 1969) now host the island's cycling and eco-tourism. It is Shanghai's cycling capital: a professional race has been held on the island annually since 2003, later elevated to UCI Women's WorldTour status, and the flat roads suit two wheels better than any other corner of the city. The west holds Xisha's tidal freshwater marsh — a stopover on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway — and Mingzhu Lake, combined as the Xisha·Mingzhu scenic area, designated 5A in February 2024 and reportedly Shanghai's first ecology-based 5A [VERIFY]. The centre is Dongping's man-made plain forest and the village rides beyond it. A 2026 official listing shows the combined scenic area as free, while Xisha historically requires advance reservation — verify the current policy. The historic south (寿安寺 at 涛声路 1188, reportedly a Song-era temple rebuilt in 1983; 金鳌山; 崇明学宫) is a separate day on foot. Plan the island as three day trips — west, centre and historic south — rather than one loop: each cluster is an hour's drive from the next. Access is via the G40 tunnel and bridge (about 1.5 hours from central Shanghai) or the 吴淞/宝杨 ferries, and the metasequoia avenues along 北沿公路 frame the rides. The farmhouse table is the island's other landmark: white-cut chicken, crab with rice cakes, Chongming cake and the island's old white wine.
