Dongping Village & Forest Ride: Football Academy, Folk-Culture Village & the Rose Seas of Qianwei

Start at Dongping Forest Park's Gate 1 (北沿公路 2188 号), where the ticket office, visitor centre and bike-hire desk sit together. If you are not bringing your own bike, hire one here — the park's rental desk is an AMap POI of its own, and e-bikes and standard bikes are both reported available, with battery and range policies to check at the desk before you commit to a one-way day. The first kilometres leave the park on 北沿公路 east, a dawn-redwood (水杉) avenue that is the ride's signature photo stop before the lanes turn quiet — the trunks run arrow-straight and the canopy closes overhead in a way that reads instantly as Chongming. The road has light weekend car traffic, so ride single-file and watch the junctions; the flat, straight riding is otherwise as easy as the island gets, and the forest smell follows you out of the gate for the first few hundred metres, with the metasequoia canopy closing over the road almost immediately.

Turn south on 秀林路 to No. 191: the Genbao Football Academy (根宝足球基地), founded by coach Xu Genbao in the 1990s — the training cradle of Shanghai Port, the club that grew out of Shanghai East Asia and later became the city's flagship football name. The base's story is the kind of football folklore that makes a cycling detour feel like a pilgrimage: an honour room with the club's trophies and a reported 200 m indoor pitch under the roof, with the youth squads that fed the professional game training on the fields around it. From the academy, the ride joins 林风公路 and heads north through the island's working countryside: flat fields, drainage channels, farm gates and the occasional tractor, with the metasequoia lining the roads where the plantations begin. The junction at 北沿公路/林风公路 is the busiest crossing of the day; after it, the lanes are almost traffic-free, and the sound drops to wind, birdsong and the occasional farm dog. On the way you cross the waterway bridges the road is named for — 张网港桥 and 东风大桥 among them, their decks barely a car wide and the water slow and brown with the island's silt — and near 长征公路 the 17 km loop variant peels west for riders planning a circular return. Keep the pace steady: the straight flat roads make it tempting to ride fast, but farm vehicles turn without signalling, the drainage ditches are unforgiving if you leave the tarmac, and the verges hide soft ground beneath the long grass.

At 林风公路 2201 号, the Jiangnan Sanmin Folk-Culture Village (江南三民文化村) is the ride's cultural centrepiece: a folk-culture museum village reported at over 100 mu, built around the homespun-cloth museum (土布馆) and 56 exhibit halls whose tagline the source pack sums up as 'things grandparents used, fathers knew, children don't'. The halls cover Chongming's hand-woven cloth — the island's 土布 tradition with its indigo patterns — plus farming tools, wedding customs and everyday village life, laid out in traditional-style buildings around planted courtyards. Handicraft workshops, 扁担担戏 puppet opera and 江南丝竹 string-and-wind performances are reported on the programme, with showtimes pinned at the ticket office, and the craft-and-harvest activities make it a natural family stop. Riders with a car at Gate 1 take the reported 17 km loop variant — west along 北沿公路, up 长征公路 and back down 林风公路 to the park — which turns the day into a proper circuit; it is a secondary-source route, so field-check the surface and traffic before committing to it. Alternatively ride the ~10 km main line back (another hour and a half of easy saddle time, mostly through the same quiet lanes in the opposite direction), or take a ride-hailing car from Qianwei to Gate 1 and skip the repetition. Whichever way you finish, close with the farmhouse food the island is known for — white-cut chicken, crab with rice cakes, braised eel and Chongming cake — booked ahead at the village restaurants on weekends, because the good tables go first, and the island's old white wine is the right way to close the loop.
