Route Summary
Baoshi Mountain is a short, easy hill walk on the north shore of West Lake that rewards you with one of the best views in all of Hangzhou. The climb takes about 10 minutes from the base to Baochu Pagoda, then a few minutes more to the summit rock platforms. From there, you look south over the full length of West Lake — a view that has been photographed for centuries and never gets old.
This walk is not a wilderness hike. It is a quick city-side hill walk that works well as a morning warm-up, a sunset outing, or a combination with the lakeside paths below. Route details on this page are based on local notes and will be refined as field checks are completed.
How to Get There
By metro
BestTake metro line 1 or 3 to Wulin Square or Fengqi Road station, then walk north toward the lake and Baochu Pagoda. The walk from the metro station to the trail access point takes roughly 10–15 minutes.
By taxi
A taxi from central Hangzhou to the Baoshu Pagoda / Baoshi Mountain area is quick — usually under 15 minutes. Ask for 保俶塔 (Baochu Pagoda) or 宝石山 (Baoshi Mountain).
By bus
Several bus lines run along Beishan Road 北山路 north of West Lake. Get off at the terminal or stop closest to Baochu Pagoda.
Save these in your phone before starting: 保俶塔 (Baochu Pagoda), 宝石山 (Baoshi Mountain), 北山路 (Beishan Road).
Step-by-Step Route
Route notes are based on local knowledge and will be refined with field checks. Approximate times assume a relaxed pace with short photo stops.
Base to the pagoda approach
~10–15 minStart from Beishan Road 北山路 near the base of the hill. Stone steps lead up through a rocky outcrop toward Baochu Pagoda 保俶塔. The climb is short but involves some stair climbing. The path is well-maintained and clearly signposted. This is the busiest section of the walk.
Baochu Pagoda viewpoint
~15–20 minBaochu Pagoda 保俶塔 is a slender stone pagoda dating from the Song dynasty. The area around the pagoda offers open views north across the city. Take the side path that continues south past the pagoda — this leads to the main West Lake viewpoint.
Photo suggestion: Baochu Pagoda with city views in the background.
Baoshi Mountain summit: West Lake panorama
~20–30 minPast the pagoda, the path continues to a set of rock platforms that form the summit of Baoshi Mountain. This is the main viewpoint. The panorama opens south across the full length of West Lake — from the Su Causeway in the west to the city skyline in the east. This is a popular spot for sunset photography. The rocks are smooth and offer several vantage points at different heights.

Return or continue
~15–20 minFrom the summit, you can either: (a) Return the same way to Beishan Road, (b) Continue along the ridge path that leads toward the city-side slopes with different city views, or (c) Descend via the east side path toward the main road for a different exit point. The entire walk takes 1–2 hours depending on photo stops and route choice.

Yes. This is a short, easy walk with a distance of about 2 km (one way) and some stone steps. It is suitable for all fitness levels, including families with children, and requires no special equipment — just comfortable shoes. The climb from the base to the summit takes about 10 minutes. -
Can I reach Baoshi Mountain without a car?
Yes. The closest metro station is within a 10–15 minute walk from the Beishan Road 北山路 base area. Buses also run along Beishan Road. From central Hangzhou, a taxi to Baochu Pagoda 保俶塔 or Baoshi Mountain 宝石山 takes under 15 minutes. This is one of the most accessible walks in Hangzhou by public transport. -
How long does the Baoshi Mountain walk take?
The walk from Beishan Road to the summit and back takes about 1 hour at a relaxed pace. The distance is about 2 km one way. Adding photo stops at Baochu Pagoda, sunset watching from the summit rocks, or exploring the ridge path extends this to 1.5 to 2 hours. -
What Chinese place names should I save for Baoshi Mountain?
Save at least three names in your phone before starting: 宝石山 (Baoshi Mountain, the hill itself), 保俶塔 (Baochu Pagoda, the landmark at the summit), and 北山路 (Beishan Road, the main access road along West Lake's north shore). These are useful for taxi drivers and local map apps. -
Is Baoshi Mountain safe after rain?
Generally yes, but the rock platforms at the summit are smooth and can be slippery in wet conditions — take care especially near the edges if taking photos. The stone steps on the approach are stable in most conditions. Avoid the summit rocks during thunderstorms due to exposure. -
Where can I find toilets and water on the Baoshi Mountain route?
Public toilets are usually available near the summit area and at the base near Beishan Road. Food and water are available at convenience stores near the base — bring a small bottle with you as there are limited options on the hill itself. -
What is the best time for photos at Baoshi Mountain?
Late afternoon and sunset provide the best light for the West Lake panorama from the summit rocks. The golden light on the lake and hills creates excellent photo conditions. Clear autumn days (October to November) offer the best visibility. The viewpoint is popular — expect crowds at sunset. -
Is there an entrance fee for Baoshi Mountain?
No. Baoshi Mountain is open and free to access — there is no entrance ticket required, unlike some other attractions in Hangzhou. -
Can I do this hike if I don't speak Chinese?
Yes. The trail itself does not require Chinese language skills. The path is well-defined and Baoshi Mountain is a popular city-side hill with other walkers. We recommend saving the Chinese place names from the "Chinese Names to Copy" card on this page before setting out — they are useful for taxi drivers, bus signs, and map apps. AMap (高德地图) has an English interface and works well for navigation. -
Is this hike safe to do alone?
Generally yes. This is a well-travelled route with other hikers around on most days. Phone signal is reliable on most of the route. As with any solo hike, tell someone your route plan, carry a power bank, and download offline maps before you start. The trail is within the city area, so help is not far away. -
Is there phone signal on the trail?
Signal is reliable throughout — the hill is within the city area with good coverage. Downloading offline maps as a backup before you start is recommended. -
What time should I start this hike?
In summer (June–August), start before 7:00 am to avoid the midday heat and humidity. In spring and autumn, 8:00–9:00 am is a comfortable start time. In winter, 9:00–10:00 am works well. The hike takes only 1–2 hours, so you have flexibility. Starting by 3:00 pm still allows you to finish before sunset.
