The Half-Day vs Full-Day Math

Most central routes are half-day affairs: 1–2 hours of walking plus transit. The outer hill routes (Sheshan, Tianma, Xiaokunshan) eat 4–6 hours once you add metro time. Build your day around transit, not the trail — Shanghai's metro is fast and cheap, so chaining two nearby routes is easy, while jumping across the city costs you an hour each way. Keep a buffer: metro gaps, a meal, and a toilet stop add up.

Morning Forest, Afternoon River

A classic easy day: go to Gongqing Forest Park (共青森林公园) in the morning (Line 8 to Shiguang Road 市光路, then bus 537 or a 15-minute walk), picnic or walk the flat loops, then metro down to the West Bund (徐汇滨江) for a late-afternoon riverside stroll and café. Both are transit-light and family-friendly, and you end the day with skyline light. Reserve Gongqing free entry on WeChat/Meituan/Ctrip before you go.

Hills Day: Sheshan + Songjiang

For a fuller day, take Line 9 to Sheshan (佘山, Exit 2), ride a shared bike the flat 3 km to the East Sheshan South Gate, walk the bamboo boardwalks and twin peaks, then lunch in Songjiang old town. If you have energy, Tianma Mountain (天马山) is a further taxi north. This is the most 'out of the city' feeling day Shanghai offers — best in clear autumn.

Riverside Relay: West Bund → Suzhou Creek → Bund Ferry

A car-free citywalk chain: start at West Bund, follow the Huangpu north, cross at a bridge or take the Huangpu River ferry (轮渡, about ¥2, Dongjin line 东金线 between the Bund and Pudong) to loop the riverside, then wander Suzhou Creek (苏州河) west past the historic bridges. Flat, paved, café-dense, and you never need a taxi. Do it late afternoon into evening for the lit skyline.

With Kids or Older Travellers

Keep it flat and toilet-rich: West Bund plus a café, or Suzhou Creek in short segments, or Gongqing's easy lakeside loop. Avoid the hill staircases (Sheshan/Tianma/Xiaokunshan) and long exposed stretches in summer. Build in a lunch stop near a metro station and pace to about 2 hours of walking before a break. The riverside promenades are the safest pick for mixed-age groups.

Logistics: Tickets, Food, Toilets

Gongqing is free but reservation-based — book ahead on the park's WeChat account, Meituan or Ctrip. Sheshan's East Sheshan Park is modestly priced; confirm current entry on the day. Food is easiest near metro stations and at West Bund's cafés; carry water for the hill routes where vendors are sparse. Public toilets exist at park entrances and along the riverside promenades — plan restroom breaks before the outer hills. Save each route's Amap (高德地图) page offline in case signal drops out west.
