What 'Easy' Means Here

We rate a route easy when it is mostly flat, paved or firmly packed, short enough to do without training, and reachable without a long taxi haul. Easy does not mean boring — Shanghai's easiest walks are along the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek, past public art, cafés and skyline views. They suit families with strollers, older travellers, and anyone who wants a relaxed half-day rather than a workout.

West Bund Riverside Citywalk

The West Bund (徐汇滨江) is a flat, wide promenade built on a former industrial waterfront — concrete and stone, step-free, and stroller-friendly. Metro Line 11 to Yunjin Road (云锦路) or Line 7/12 to Middle Longhua Road (龙华中路) puts you on it. Allow 1–2 hours one way; there are cafés, the tank museums and plenty of shade. This is the single best easy walk in the city.

Suzhou Creek Citywalk

Suzhou Creek (苏州河) winds through the city centre with continuous riverside paths and historic bridges. Start near East Nanjing Road (南京东路, Line 2) and walk west past the woolen-mill architecture and the Moganshan art district. It is flat, paved and endlessly walkable in short segments — do as much or as little as you like. Evenings are lit and lively.

Gongqing Forest Park (Flat Loops)

Gongqing (共青森林公园) is mostly gentle grade with shaded, compacted paths and boardwalks — not a climb. The lakeside and forest loops are easy; save the small hills for later. Take Line 8 to Shiguang Road (市光路), then bus 537 or a 15-minute walk to the West Gate. The park is free but reservation-based — book on WeChat, Meituan or Ctrip first. Good for picnics and kids.

Pudong Riverside & Xiaokunshan

The Pudong Riverside greenway (浦东滨江) is long and flat; pick one section near a metro station (Lines 6/7/8/10/14 by section) for an easy out-and-back. Xiaokunshan Park (小昆山公园) in Songjiang is a gentle loop, reachable via Line 9 to Songjiang South (松江南站) then a short taxi. Both are calm and low-effort compared with the western mountain trails.
